The idea of touring the island of Zakynthos (Zante) on rented vehicles like quad bikes excites many, however there is some information to be aware of before you hop in the driver’s seat. This post highlights some key info and provides tips to ensure your experience with driving in Zante is smooth and safe.

Renting Vehicles on the Island

Renting a car, quad bike, or scooter is a popular way to see the island up close. To rent a car, you need to be at least 21 and hold a valid driver’s license, though some rental companies allow 18-year-olds to rent quad bikes or scooters with a license. Remember that driving in Greece means staying on the right side of the road, which can be tricky if you're used to driving on the left.

Speed limits on the island generally range from 50 km/h (30 mph) in town areas to 90 km/h (56 mph) on rural roads and up to 130 km/h (81 mph) on highways.

Iceland, known for its dramatic landscapes, is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. From towering waterfalls and steaming geysers to its world-famous Northern Lights, this island nation promises unforgettable experiences.

Safety Tips for Driving

Greece enforces a strict blood alcohol limit of 0.05%, so it’s safest to avoid drinking entirely if you plan on driving; even one drink could place you over the limit. For many tourists, quad bikes and scooters are an exciting way to get around, but be aware that helmet use is required by law and that fines can be steep for those who don't comply. While quad bikes are fun, they can be difficult to control on Zante's winding roads, so only rent one if you’re confident in your abilities.

Road conditions vary greatly across Zante, especially when driving to remote beaches or mountainous areas, where you might encounter potholes, steep turns, uneven terrain, and even stray animals crossing the road. The roads can become congested with tourists and locals during the summer, so it’s best to drive calmly and avoid imitating any risky driving behaviors you might observe from locals.

Kyoto offers a glimpse into Japan's rich history with its well-preserved temples, traditional tea houses, and serene gardens. It's a perfect blend of ancient culture and modern allure.

Parking and Preparation

Parking can be challenging in busy areas like Laganas and Zakynthos town, so it’s advisable to use official parking lots to avoid fines or towing. In rural areas, parking is generally easier, but make sure not to block private driveways or narrow roads.

Before renting, check your insurance coverage, as basic policies may not cover all types of damages or accidents. Be prepared with adequate fuel as well, since most companies require you to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when you rented it. Fuel stations are plentiful in town areas but harder to come by in remote locations. Different rental companies may have unique rules, age restrictions, and additional fees, so it’s a good idea to call or email ahead to confirm these details.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to enjoy a safe and memorable trip, experiencing all that Zante has to offer beyond its famous party hotspots.
